Colchester Harbour Achieves ‘Blue Flag’ Status For the Third Year!
The Town of Essex recently announced that Colchester Harbour had been awarded ‘Blue Flag’ status for the third year in a row! An internationally recognized eco-certification, the highly respected Blue Flag is a clear indication of the area’s hard work and dedication!
There are currently only 40 blue flags flying across Canada, a designation that is carefully administered and awarded by Environmental Defence. Internationally, the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) has approved the flying of over 4000 flags in 45 countries. The flag allows visitors to identify beaches and marinas that have made the commitment to prioritize sustainability, safety standards, accessibility for all residents and the highest level of cleanliness.

All applications for Blue Flag designation are carefully reviewed by a jury each year, assessing for a number of specific factors including water quality, safety standards, and environmental stewardship. Only those who meet the strictest requirements will achieve the honor of flying the internationally recognized flag.
“When you see a Blue Flag flying at a beach or marina, you know that it’s clean, safe and sustainably managed,” explained Kelsey Scarfone, Blue Flag Program Manager with Environmental Defence. “These world-class beaches and marinas have worked hard to achieve the standards set by this prestigious award.”
For the Town of Essex, this is yet another example of the hard work, commitment, and dedication that has been put forth to make Colchester Harbour a go-to spot for families and residents throughout the summer season. With a fully operational harbour, groomed beach area, pirate ship playground, and a splash pad, there is something for everyone!
What does it take?
