Kingsville Essex Associated Band: Canadian History In Our Own Back Yard
This past week, the people of Essex came together to celebrate Heritage Week, an opportunity to learn about the events of our past, how the Essex County area was formed and the many ways that we can continue to honour our history today. However, there is one incredible piece of Canadian history right here in our own back yards that many Essex residents are unaware of – the Kingsville Essex Associated Band.
First founded as the ‘Essex Boys Band’ back in 1937, the focus was on military-style marching as they performed for tattoos, parade and festivals across Ontario, Michigan and even into Montreal. Since that time, the band has undergone a number of significant changes. They have performed at the Traverse City Cherry Festival, Parliament Hill in Ottawa, the Calgary Stampede, along the Main Street of the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World and through the park at Canada’s Wonderland.
The most significant change that occurred within the band was the shift from a boy’s band to a family band that welcomed all musicians regardless of age, gender and experience level. Today, the Kingsville Essex Associated Band offers weekly classes for those that would like to perform one day with the band including not only instrumental instruction but also Majorettes and Colour Guard, no experience required!
Having celebrated their 80th Anniversary in 2017, the Kingsville Essex Associated Band (as they are now called) currently holds the title of longest continuously running community marching band for all of Canada, an important piece of our country’s history right here in Essex County.
They continue to perform in our local parades and festivals, sharing their love of music with all who want to listen.
Are you a performer in the Windsor/Essex area interested in getting involved? Does your child (or do you) want to learn to play an instrument or perform with the Majorettes and Colour Guard? The band is always open to new members! Contact them at [email protected] for more information.
